When an industrial off gas complies with all dust and gas emission restrictions in terms of concentration (e.g. mg's/m³ ) there can still be an odour problem.
Generally the odour components are present in very low concentrations and they can even be annoying in the ppb range. Mostly the odour is of organic origin and consists of many different components.
All these components together cause the odour whilst modifying one component only can increase or decrease the total odour level. The human nose can often detect components in very low concentrations which analytical instruments cannot.
